Full Description

Site of mill complex, depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps, but demolished in 2008. The woollen industry first practised on this site in 1812, under the name of Arbuthnot, Scott and Company, using the Kirk Burn as the power source. From 1823-54 mills were used variously as a brewery, sawmill, bone-crushing mill, and a flour and meal mill. Thomas Smith revived the woollen trade in 1854. The mills were largely rebuilt after a fire in 1859 but still retained much of their original character in terms of the 19th century offices and mill buildings to the north-east which survived. A programme of historic building recording was subsequently carried out by AOC in October 2008 prior to the demolition of the mill complex. The historic building survey identified a number of former mill buildings on the site ranging in date from the late 19th to the late 20th Centuries. Between March and April 2009, AOC undertook an evaluation over the site, which identified a series of significant Medieval and Post-Medieval features and possible structures including pits, postholes and ditches. The retrieved artefact assemblage included a selection of late 13th-early 14th Century locally produced redware pottery sherds. A watching brief was carried out in 2018 by Headland Archaeology prior to proposed development. The area covered was a 25 square metre area centred at NK 1264 4609. There were no features, deposits or artefacts of archaeological significance identified during the watching brief.
