Full Description

Site of fish-curing and canning works, founded by Maconochie Brothers in 1883. Archibald and James Maconochie set up their first preserving factory in 1873 in Lowestoft, Suffolk, but spotting a gap in the market, they established premises at Fraserburgh in 1883. Their publicity stated that herrings were 'Caught and Canned in a Day' at Maconochies. The company famously produced a canned meat and vegetable stew for the army, 'Maconochie's Stew', which received mixed reactions from the troops. First adopted by the War Office for the Ashanti, Zulu, Afghan and Egyptian Campaigns of 1873-1882, and used during the Boer Wars and World War I, accounts describe the stew thus: 'Warmed in the tin, Maconochie's was edible. Cold it was a man-killer'. The site is now occupied by the Caley Fisheries group.
