Full Description
Site of stone clearance heaps and a possible flint working quarry. A group of seven cairns is recorded on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps, annotated as 'Site of'. OS visit in 1972 noted that 'in the vicinity of the published site, an uncultivated area of whin and heather-covered ground, are about six robbed stone clearance heaps. There are very large boulders left amongst the clearance heaps, with a possible bank at the northern end of the area.' Fieldwork in 1999 located few examples that could be described as cairns. A survey and evaluation was carried out by CFA in 2002 (see also NK04SE0136). The survey identified 16 cairns, only one of which could be equated to a previously mapped cairn. Excavation of six cairns showed them to be modern, however under one of these was an in-situ flint scatter preserved in the topsoil under the cairn and of Bronze Age date, including platform core technology and a few retouched pieces. Trial trenching across the site revealed no pre-modern features.
