Full Description

Site of a mill. A large unroofed structure, comprising two buildings is depicted on the OS 1st edition map annotated 'Mill of Auchlee (in ruins, Cloth)'. It does not appear on the 2nd Edition OS Map. This mill was part of the rural spinning and weaving community of Longside. Auchlee Mill was established by Thomas and Robert Kilgour in 1795 near the banks of the Ugie. A deep ditch was cut between Ardlaw Hill and Woodside and joined the Ugie upstream at Knapps which ran to the loch. Dying sheds were also built on the banks of the Ugie at Millbank (foundations of which are still visible circa 2000). The business at Auchlee was dissolved in 1826. They employed about 40 families at the height of the industry, providing most with a house and garden. The Kilgours were responsible for building Millbank. The Mill was demolished in 1882.
