Full Description

Site of alleged burials. Three stone slabs were ploughed up in 1967 on a low earthen spur in a gentle sloping field. Each slab was of identical shape 1.1m x 1.1m x 0.1m thick, and were superimposed directly upon each other, the top slab being 0.3m below ground surface. They were obviously the result of one stone having been split into three, as evidenced by the weathering on the edges and faces. Mr Morison removed the stones and dug a pit 0.6m sq x 0.8m deep, below their position, but no finds were made in the sandy soil, although the soil was 'loose' suggesting that a cavity had at one time existed there. The original stone may have covered a burial, but may equally well be a natural feature of no archaeological associations. In 1970, another alleged 'short cist' was found circa 100yds west of the three slabs. It is evident from the description that it is also a fractured rock slab of no archaeological significance.
