Full Description
Site of cists found in 1866 while quarrying for stone to build railway bridges at Strichen. Several urns with human remains were found 'enclosed in a cluster of cists' according to Jervise. Some of the urns had flint arrowheads placed on either side. One urn, 278 mm high by 276 mm diameter, was inverted over calcined bones and had two halves of a broken decorated stone battle-axe (of Roe's type IIIE(N)) on either side of it. Another imperfect urn, 176 mm diameter at its shoulder, was inverted over a child's cremation. A beaker, type CA, found at Strichen in 1866 and donated to Aberdeen Museum, probably comes from this site (NJ95SW0006). To date, no further finds have been reported from this area.
