Full Description

Site of a possible motte/ castle. The foundations of a building were discovered during the construction of the Buchan Railway line. Two or three defaced coins and a stone cup were found. A 19th century description recorded that it then consisted of the foundations of a building on 'an apparently artificial mound' and was traditionally believed to have been the residence of the Earl Marischals. Although held of the Earl Marischal as part of the Lordship of Altrie, 'The Manor Place of Auldmad' was apparently in the hands of Sir William Keith of Ludquharn in 1681. It appears possible that a 17th century manor-house or fortalice had been erected on an earlier motte. The mound appears to be part of a natural spur cut through by the railway.
