Full Description
A geophysical survey was carried out in 2017 by RGC on an area of approximately 4ha around Deer Abbey (NJ94NE0004). A series of linear anomalies in the centre and west of the survey area correspond with paths laid by Ferguson during 'redevelopment' of the site as an orchard and gardens. Some of the plans for the gardens may have been aspirational as there is no evidence for at least one feature. The eastern half of the survey area was dominated by a series of slightly narrower linear anomalies, visible on the surface as slight earthworks and indicate former paths or possibly walls. A feature in the northern half of the area west of the Abbey is thought to be natural, indicating a river terrace although it is possible that it may be a track. An area to the north of this appears to correspond with structures noted on a plan of 1789. A well defined rectilinear anomaly was noted in the northwest corner of the survey area. To the southeast of the abbey a cluster of broad anomalies was recorded but it is unclear whether these indicate structural remains or are natural. Within the abbey ruins some anomalies appear to relate to past excavation, consolidation or landscaping. One area corresponds to the former mausoleum and a linear feature appears to be an extension of the abbey drain.
