Full Description

An archaeological evaluation was carried out by Cameron Archaeology and a team of volunteers in December 2017 of a number of possible structures and other features in the woods which had been identified during a walkover survey of the woodlands. Three of the structures were investigated. Structure 1 (Trench 1) appears to consist of large natural boulders rolled into place to form basic walls, with a platform or foundation, and possibly internal floor, of small stones. One flint and some quartz was recovered by no other dating evidence. Structure 2 (Trench 5) comprised a sub-oval area of large stones. Several sherds of 19th century pottery were recovered but no other finds. Two large stones of Structure 6 were excavated in Trench 6. Large boulders had been placed in a sub-oval shape with smaller packing stones to create a basic walling, possibly for agricultural use such as a sheepfold. Trench 2 was dug through a bank and ditch which were concluded to relate to woodland management. A shallow ditch in Trench 3 was not thought to be archaeological , although one flint was recovered form disturbed loam in the centre of the trench. Trench 4 was excavated next to a large earthfast boulder but no archaeological features or finds were observed. The structures are thought to most likely be associated with estate management or military use. A line of four large stones not investigated during this work may be part of a structure or could have been the result of clearing for tree planting or paths. There were few finds, although two flints were recovered from excavated soil, and 19th century pottery was recovered from topsoil in Trench 5.
