Full Description
Possible line of bank and ditch around the early monastic settlement. Trial trenching was carried out by MAS in September 2011 as part of the Book of Deer Project to investigate the early medieval Monastery of Deer. Four trenches were excavated on the line of suggested vallum around the monastic settlement but there was no evidence that surviving features were of early date. The bank to the back of gardens on the north side of Abbey Street (see also NJ94NE0099) produced a small number of 19th to 20th century sherds in the upper fill of Trench 1, and abraded medieval sherds form Trenches 1 and 3. There are a number of features that are slightly unusual for a 19th century field boundary and there is a slight possibility that it might be an earlier feature. The dyke investigated by Trench 13 on the Russell Street lane (see also NJ94NE0104) appears to be a typical field dyke. It is possible that the ditch may be under the road - the roadway at the back of the gardens on the north side of Abbey Street and the Russell Street lane are both circa 4.5 m to 5 m wide.
