Full Description

Fieldwalking was carried out in September 2012 as part of the Old Deer Project, led by MAS. The majority of the finds were of 19th - 20th century date, including redwares, stoneware, china and bottle and vessel glass, and fragments of clay tobacco pipe. There were also quantities of fuel debris from domestic hearths. The material was almost certainly derived from spreading of midden material on the fields. A total of 12 flints were also found: four pebble fragments, 3 amorphous chunks and 3 struck flakes (though with no indication that this was not naturally flaked by ploughing). Nine sherds of very abraded pottery of probable 15th to 17th century date were also recovered. These are also likely to have been derived from the spread of midden material.
