Full Description

A single trench was excavated in this area in October 2011 by MAS as part of the Book of Deer Project. Russell Street and the curved lane leading towards it have been discussed as a possible line of the vallum around the south and west sides of the site of the early monastery. It was hoped that the grassed areas around the Aden Crescent development might have been undisturbed and that some early levels might survive. Potential in this area appears low as the building works and landscaping of the development appear to have destroyed earlier stratigraphy. However the occurrence of a sherd of medieval pottery in the topsoil suggests that this area was within the medieval settlement.
