Full Description

Three trenches (6 to 8) were excavated in this area in October 2011 by MAS as part of the Book of Deer Project. This area is shown as garden ground on the 1st edition OS map. The excavation revealed that the natural at this point was circa 600mm below the level of the yard behind the house. Sherds of 19th-20th Century pottery was found throughout trenches 6 and 7. The evidence shows that most of this area has been continuously used as garden ground, with some evidence of deliberate terracing at the north end. While there were no pre-modern features, the sherds of 14th/15th century pottery indicates medieval activity nearby, possibly on or near the street frontage.
