Full Description

Site of Tolbooth, demolished 1842, and which stood on or close to No 7 The Square. The site is now partly occupied by a shop and a dwelling house which incorporates a kind of cell and some stone steps into it. Built into the south gable is the coat-of-arms of Baillie James Gordon, now only represented by fine segmental dormer-head with what has been claimed to be the Bailie Gordon's coat of arms. The motto reads VENIUNT FELICIUS UVAE ('Grapes come with good fortune'), the grapes appearing on the achievement. Tradition of the Tolbooth still survives although there is no local knowledge of a 'cell' or stone steps. The coat-of-arms remains as described.

Period Notes
