Full Description

Pits and a spread of burnt material recorded during a watching brief carried out by CFA in 2017 during groundworks for the an underground cable route (NJ81SW0309). Pit 028 was irregular and may have been a natural feature although it contained a sherd of prehistoric pottery. Pit 030 was circular in plan, 1 m in diameter, 0.2 m deep, and thought to be a fire pit. It contained a layer of cobbles: a flint chip was recovered from the pit. Pit 38 was oval, 0.35 m by 0.2 m and 0.15 m deep. The spread of burnt material was only partly exposed in the trench with the deepest deposits extending to the south. The exposed area measured 5.3 m by 5 m and was maximum 0.5 m deep. Many of the cobbles with in the fill were shattered or degrading and appear by have been heated.
