Full Description

A trial trenching evaluation was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in March to April 2021 ahead of proposed development. A total of 161 trenches were excavated. Some traces of rig and furrow were recorded, indicating more intensive land use from the 19th century onwards. A total of 50 lithics were recovered, with a marked concentration to the northeast, but no archaeological features were identified. Three flints were recovered from a charcoal-flecked silt in a palaeochannel which ran across Field 2 (near the south end of the site). One field drain yielded a complete small blue glass bottle and stoneware jar, as well as broken crockery and glass bottles. Post excavation analysis of the lithic assemblage (48 lithics) concluded that although no particularly diagnostic pieces were recovered, the technology based on bipolar and hard-hammer reduction techniques indicates a Bronze Age date. The assemblage is almost entirely of knapping waste (waste flakes and cores) and may represent a Bronze Age settlement in this area of the site. Vitrified flakes suggest that the are may have contained one or more cremations, destroyed by ploughing. A single piece has been ascribed to the later Neolithic period. Fills from the palaeochannel have been radiocarbon dated to 2236 - 2131 BC and 1429 - 1291 BC indicating that the channel was infilling during the Bronze Age.

Period Notes
Radiocarbon dating - samples from fill of palaeochannel dated to 2236-2131 BC (calibrated), and 1429 -1291 BC (calibrated).
