Full Description
Geophysical survey was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2012, followed by a programme of trial trenching in 2013 ahead of the new western bypass. A watching brief in 2007 on test pitting along the AWPR route had recorded no archaeological features. Many of the anomalies identified in the geophysical survey proved not to be archaeological. Trench NL0869 (circa NJ 93680 14476) uncovered a single pit of unknown date and function. trench NL0876 (circa NJ 93906 14448) contained the remains of a possible boundary ditch, 2.4m wide and 0.55m deep. The ephemeral remains of possible agriculture furrows were recorded in several trenches centred around NJ 9418 1434. Three features in trenches NL0909 and 0911 produced only modern pottery and were probably of 20th century date.
