Full Description

Paleoenvironmental and geophysical survey was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2012 ahead of the proposed Aberdeen Western Peripheral route (the area extended across the Shire boundary - recorded on Aberdeenshire HER as NJ91NW0155). Results of palaeoenvironmental survey using a manual auger carried out across an area of wetland at Red Moss showed that peats were present in only two areas, at the western end and just to the west of the central area sampled (both within Aberdeenshire). The maximum peat thickness was between 0.56m and 0.89m. Subsequent trial trenching by Headland Archaeology in 2013 on this section recorded only two features, at circa NJ 92693 14734, a spread of stones possibly from field clearance, and a linear feature which was probably a truncated field boundary. A watching brief in 2007 on test pitting along the AWPR route had recorded no archaeological features.
