Full Description

Paleoenvironmental and geophysical survey was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2012 ahead of the proposed Aberdeen Western Peripheral route (the area extended across the City boundary, recorded on Aberdeen City HER as NJ91SW0407). Results of palaeoenvironmental survey using a manual auger carried out across an area of wetland at Red Moss showed that peats were present in only two areas, at the western end and just to the west of the central area sampled. The maximum peat thickness was between 0.56 m and 0.89 m. Geophysical survey recorded enclosures or a field system, together with linear features which may be cultivation remains, at at circa NJ 9213 1505. Subsequent trial trenching carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2013 recorded a number of archaeological features, see NJ91NW0159, NJ91NW0160, NJ91NW0161. A watching brief in 2007 on test pitting along the AWPR route had recorded no archaeological features.
