Full Description
Fieldwalking and test-pitting were carried out by CFA Archaeology in January and June 2023 ahead of construction of a new golf course. The fieldwalking covered 101 grids each 30 m square. A total of 102 flints were recovered, all from the fieldwalking, 100 of these (NJ91NE0184) from adjacent grid squares which covered part of a relict land surface where natural cobbles had been exposed by the dune blowout. The two other flints were single finds from different areas. Given the possibility for dunes to be masking further cobbles in other areas a limited programme of test-pitting was carried out. The cobble surface was identified in nine test pits at a depth between 0.1 m and 0.4 m below the current ground surface, overlain by wind-blown sand.
