Full Description
Pits recorded during a programme of trial trenching by Headland Archaeology in 2013 ahead of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (NJ91SE0038). Two pits were recorded in Trench NL0977, one of which produced some pieces of ferrous slag and an unidentified iron object. A large oval pit in Trench NL0988, measuring 0.8m by 0.7m by 0.3m contained lithics including a blade and core with associated debitage, indicating a possible prehistoric date for this feature. Two small sub-circular features in Trench NL0976 may be of natural origin. Further excavation was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2014. Six pits were recorded, three containing a significant assemblage (122 pieces) of lithics, all but one of flint, including cores and tools, two pieces of which may date to the Mesolithic period. Radiocarbon dating of charcoal from one of the pits gave a Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age date, 2270-2040 BC.
