Full Description
In 2009 an archaeological evaluation was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group. The works consisted of a 7 percent sample intrusive evaluation in two fields with trenching amounting to a total of some 7,840 m2. The evaluation revealed three principal suites of features of archaeological significance comprising a probable Bronze Age ring-ditch, a roundhouse and three pits. Artefacts recovered from the features included prehistoric pottery sherds and flint. A top-soil strip was carried out in 2016 by AOC Archaeology to ascertain the extant, nature and identity of the remains discovered in 2009. All structural features were then hand-excavated. Two 50 metre by 50 metre areas were opened centred on the features previously discovered. The work recorded a ring-ditch enclosure and a number of post-holes indicative of two different phases of roundhouse construction. During excavation of the features a number of flint and pottery fragments were recovered. A number of medieval or post-medieval pits were recorded containing pottery fragments, and a number of undated pits were also recorded.
