Full Description

Burial ground depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. Occupying a commanding site on the Eastern flanks of Buiternach, this walled burial-ground probably dates from the mid-eighteenth century and was originally intended for use by the Roman Catholic community throughout Glenlivet. It was consecrated in 1750. A source from 1794 describes the consecration ceremony conducted by two bishops. It later accommodated Protestants, who wished to 'have their bones laid in this quiet place'. There are few above ground monuments, which belies the number of graves present. There is a number of table tombs, in local slate, dated to 1790, and one possibly dated 1704. Other monuments are of 19th and 20th century date. Monumental inscriptions within the burial ground have been recorded by the Moray Burial Ground Research Group: the oldest date recorded was 1796.
