Full Description

Geophysical surveys carried out around Mote Hill (NJ90NW0020). Resistivity survey had been undertaken by North East Scotland Geophysics in 1999 on the summit of the hill and to east and west of the mound. One particular anomaly was noted east of the hill. Shallow resistivity survey around the hill was carried out in 2001 by GSB Prospection ahead of excavation on Mote Hill. This identified a number of anomalies, three of which lay around the base of the hill and were interpreted as possible stone work. A deep resistivity profile was conducted across the hill by the University of Aberdeen circa 2016. Shallow resistivity survey by the University in November 2021 on areas east and west of the hill , recorded two anomalies. One was a rectilinear block in the far west of the survey area, the second a circular area on the northern boundary of the survey area just east of Tillydrone Hill. Magnetic Susceptibility Gradiometer Survey by University of Aberdeen in January 2022 identified no features deemed to be of archaeological significance. Photogrammetry survey in January 2022 aimed at providing an accurate topographic model of the ground surface over the hill was hampered by numerous tree debris on the ground.
