Full Description
Site of a United Free Church depicted on the OS 1st edition map. Construction began circa 1841. A church hall was added on the north side in 1880 designed by Ellis and Wilson. The church became known as Blackfriars Church around 1932, although the church was dissolved in 1937 and the building purchased by the Town Council and used alongside the adjoining property to establish the Aberdeen Trades College. The site is now occupied by modern flats. The church held two First World War rolls of honour, unveiled at a memorial service in the church in August 1921, commemorating members of the Mar and Haddo Lodges of the Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds who fell during the war. Descriptions are given in a contemporary newspaper article. The Mar Lodge memorial, designed by A Wood, is a large picture in oils which has the names of the fallen printed in gold letters on a dark background, the whole surmounted by the emblem of the order, and each side draped with the flags of the Allies. On the right side is the figure of war with a shield on which is inscribed 1914, on the left is the figure of peace with a shield inscribed 1919. At the bottom is a picture of tanks in action and a seaplane attack in the North Sea. The Haddo Roll of Honour is a smaller picture by Mr M'ntosh in watercolours, at the top of which is the emblem of the Order with two figures holding a Union Jack. On the right of the picture is a sailor with soldier opposite. Below the names of the fallen is the inscription ';They, in the hour of need and trial, nobly responded to the nation's call for her sons to serve their King and country'. In 1937 when the church was sold the memorials were gifted to the nearby St George's in the West Church which closed as a church in 1969 (now the Credo Centre).
