Full Description

A trial trenching evaluation was carried out in May 2010 by Highland Archaeology Services on the foreshore west of Torry Quay ahead of harbour developments. Eight trenches were excavated to a maximum depth of 1.2m. Two trenches produced artefacts of 19th-20th century date suggesting they were located within trenches cut into the foreshore, probably for berthing of boats in the 20th century. No prehistoric or medieval evidence was found at this location, and it is likely that the prehistoric ground surface was at a higher level. To the south of the area a stone embankment survives, together with several slipways and wooden post alignments. The slipways and jetties are probably mid 20th century in date and associated with salmon fishing which took place on this shore of the Dee until the late 1980s.
