Full Description
A trial trenching evaluation was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in March 2013 on the site of the proposed health centre, in order to locate the line of the Aberdeenshire canal (NJ81SE0535). Historic OS maps show the site occupied by various buildings, including a tramway depot (NJ90NW0755). Three trenches were excavated; no trenching was possible on the north side of the electricity substation, and excavation across the site was limited by existing modern services. The canal was recorded in only one trench. Its full width was not revealed but it was lined with puddled blue-grey clay. A brick well, thought to have been in the area of Trench 1 was not located.
