Full Description

Former garage and public house. A standing building survey was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in 2012 ahead of demolition. The building fronting on to Jopps Lane and latterly in use as a garage, was of several phases of development. It is possible that it was originally built in the 18th century, possibly as a stables given a large cart door of this phase, but which was substantially altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. Fronting Loch Street, the Lochside Bar dated from the mid 20th century, having replaced McBride's Bar which was destroyed in an air raid in 1941. Following demolition of the buildings, trial trenching evaluation of the site revealed evidence of the former Aberdeen Loch. Documentary evidence indicates that in the 17th century geese were feeding on the grass of the loch, and in 1661 Parson Gordon described it as a marsh. The Taylor map of 1773 shows the bed of the loch as an are of dry land named 'Lochlands'.
