Full Description
A trial trenching evaluation was carried out by MAS in October 2006 ahead of proposed development, to determine if any traces of the Aberdeenshire Canal (NJ81SE0535) or associated features survive on the site. A single trench was excavated at the north edge of the site. This uncovered a wooden revetment, 12.5m long, aligned east-west parallel to the line of the former canal, and abutting a stone wall at its east end. The revetment was formed of vertical split timbers of roughly prepared pine. The wall was of well laid horizontal courses of rubble stone, with three dressed square blocks as the west end. These features are thought to relate to a wharf or passing place for the canal.
