Full Description

A watching brief was carried out by Aberdeen City Council Archaeological Unit in May to August 2008 during groundworks for a new hotel. The site included the Hardgate well (NJ90NW0508), long romantically associated with the Battle of Justice Mills in 1644. The superstructure over the well which had been built in 1970, was recorded prior to its demolition for the hotel construction. This revealed the well beneath which had a maximum depth of 1.7m. Monitoring of topsoil stripping over the rest of the site recorded no other archaeological deposits.
