A watching brief carried out by A Cameron in 2008 during building work for construction of boundary walls at the Citadel recorded a medieval wall foundation in open ground at the rear (east) of the site, close to the area occupied by Aberdeen Castle.

A watching brief carried out by A Cameron in 2008 during building work for construction of boundary walls at the Citadel recorded a medieval wall foundation in open ground at the rear (east) of the site, close to the area occupied by Aberdeen Castle. The wall was aligned east-west and constructed of large and small fieldstones. An accumulation of garden soils on the south side contained sherds of medieval (13th - 15th century) pottery. Oyster shell in the bonding material of the wall points to a medieval date. Other remains of probably later walls were also recorded, in one of which was an armorial panel probably built into this wall when heightened in the late 19th or 20th century. In the exterior areas to the north and south of the Citadel a network of services had destroyed any archaeological remains which might have survived the construction of the Citadel (NJ90NW1148).
