Full Description

Excavations were carried out by ACC Archaeological Unit in 1974 in Collison's Aisle (the north transept of St Nicholas Church - NJ90NW0009) and the north half of the crossing prior to installation of a heating system. A coin of David I (1145-53) found in the foundation of the north-west pier of the tower, suggested a 12th-century date for at least that portion of the building. Much of the excavated area had been disturbed by burials. Later features included the base of a tomb, possibly that of Provost Davidson who died in 1411.
