One trench was excavated in the northern portion of the available area on the frontage of Canal Street in September 2001 by the Aberdeen City Council Archaeological Unit.

One trench was excavated in the northern portion of the available area on the frontage of Canal Street in September 2001 by the Aberdeen City Council Archaeological Unit. This is thought, from the old maps of the area to be the likely position of remains of the Aberdeenshire Canal. A cut 0.7m wide and 0.5m deep was excavated. It contained layers of sands and silts. The foundation trench for a mortar-bonded stone wall was also excavated. It was 0.5m deep and 0.7m wide and was circa 1m south of the cut feature. A small number of 19th-century finds were recovered from the soils around the features, but none from within the individual features. The cut feature was probably the southern edge of the Aberdeenshire Canal. The wall may have been a boundary wall for the land occupied by the canal. This suggests that the boundary of the canal lands was approximately one metre from the southern edge of the canal which is possible as the tow-path for the canal ran along the northern side of the Canal, where, presumably there was a much wider strip of land.
