Full Description

An archaeological assessment was carried out by the Aberdeen City Council Archaeological Unit in March and April 2003 prior to construction of a lift shaft. Despite 19th to 20th-century disturbance consisting of a sewer pipe trench, a concrete block possibly associated with the former Mitchell and Muil's bakery, and a foundation trench for the East wall of RGU Student Union, layers containing medieval deposits in the form of pottery sherds were recorded immediately below the paving of the car park. Further investigation in the South East corner of the trench revealed a pit, again of medieval origin, cut to a depth of some 1.35m below the level of the car park into the natural subsoils. A trial trench through medieval deposits on the West side of sewer pipe trench indicated that the pit extends to the West, reaching a depth of at least 1.80m below the block paving. Previous investigations had revealed only slight traces of medieval activity but a great deal of relatively modern disturbance. The current assessment has revealed the existence of at least one substantial medieval feature, and the survival of at least 1m depth of medieval stratigraphy.
