Full Description

Site of a grain mill, dating from the mid-late 19th century, depicted on the OS 2nd edition map annotated City Corn Mills. This was one of the larger oatmeal mills in the City, and comprised a main mill block and granary, with a drying kiln behind the main range. It appears to have been disused by the 1970s. Standing building survey carried out by Cameron Archaeology in February 2011 ahead of demolition recorded three buildings. The original 4-storey mill was of 9 bays, built of coursed granite rubble with cherry-cocking, which had a pyramidal-roofed kiln projecting to the rear, a scar showing where this had been removed. A lower three-storey extension was added to the northeast gable of the original mill, in about the late 19th century. It is of 5 bays of coursed granite rubble with cherry cocking. A modern single storey extension was added at the south of the site in the 1970s when the site was acquired by the Shore Porters Society. A watching brief was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in July - August 2012 but no archaeological features or artefacts were recorded.
