Full Description

Site of a bridge (or viaduct) built in 1768 designed by architect William Law to carry the new Marischal Street from the high ground of Castle Street to the lower shore. It was a single segmental arch, one of a series of bridges built to open up new areas of the city for development. A trench was excavated by Aberdeen City Council Archaeological Unit in a chamber below the south end of the bridge prior to major works associated with the Virginia Street road widening. The excavation revealed a wall, probably associated with construction of the bridge. A plaque close to the site reads: 'Bannerman's Bridge. The old bridge which stood here from 1768 was replaced by Grampian Regional Council in 1984 as part of the Aberdeen inner relief road'.
