Full Description

Excavation carried out in 1974 ahead of construction of a dual carriageway recorded medieval remains of the 13th to 15th centuries. The lowest levels contained remains of a 13th Century road or cart track, possibly giving access from the Castle date area to Futtie. Above was a mixed area of rubbish pits, shell middens and pottery of 14th century date. Above this was a cobbled roadway, laid down sometime in the 15th century: this was probably the Futty Wynd, which was destroyed by later development on Castle Hill. There was also some possible evidence of the quarrying of clay, both earlier than the road construction. The finds from this site are in the collections of Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums.
