Full Description

A trial trenching evaluation was carried out in November - December 2010 by Highland Archaeology Services on the foreshore ahead of harbour developments. Twelve trenches were excavated, including three on just outwith the site area on the highest point of the beach. All the deposits recorded were beach deposits containing artefacts of 19th-20th century date. No prehistoric or medieval evidence was found at this location, and it is likely that the prehistoric ground surface was at a higher level. The River Dee was substantially altered in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The investigation also recorded a wooden revetment and stone embankment, and a granite base, probably for a leading light (NJ90NE0082). The revetment, which was on the north side of the embankment, was constructed of wooden planking jointed with large wooden clench bolts.
