Full Description

Site of castle situated on the bank of a ravine leading to the village of Pennan. When visited in 1988 by Bogdan and Bryce, a small section of walling was visible, exposed by erosion, literally on the edge of the ravine. Part of the castle may have been destroyed by quarrying. It was the seat of the Bairds of Auchmedden from 1534-1750. In 1597, during the absence of the laird, the House of Auchmedden was attacked by James Cheyne of Pennan. In 1732 it was described as 'a fair and old court'. By the early 19th Century the only part that survived served as a granary.

Period Notes
Bairds owned castle from 1534-1750; attacked in 1597; still existed in 1732.
