Full Description
A trial trenching evaluation was carried out over this site in February 2011 by MAS in advance of a proposed cemetery extension. In total, 5 trenches were excavated. In trenches 1, 2 and 4 the remains of a dyke or track were identified. Also in trench 2, a pit feature was observed. This pit appeared to be a prehistoric feature, but the only evidence for this was in an upper layer of the fill which contained some charcoal, a very small fragment of burnt bone and a flint flake. The lower fill and top fill were of clean fairly compact redeposited natural containing no charcoal or artefacts. It did not appear therefore that layer 3 was the primary fill of the pit and it could potentially have been an incidental part of backfilling from earlier investigations (undertaken in 1912, but not located). No other finds or features of archaeological significance were encountered.
