Full Description

Site of a stone, traditionally the putting stone of a giant. The stone is depicted on the OS 1st edition map surveyed in 1870. OS Name Book (1871) states this to be a large roundish stone with several holes (possibly cup-marks) built on an old fence forming a side of the public road from New Deer to Brockley (suggested to be Brucklay). A stone variously known as Crawford Putting Stone, Mauns Stone, the Devils Putting Stone, Crawstane, or Crawstane) is recorded in local folklore relating to Fedderate Castle and the Crawfords who owned it. Described in this lore as a boulder polished smooth covered on both sides with circular indentations, the size of the stone seemingly increased with telling of the tale, and by the 19th century was said to be many tons in weight. In 1936, during widening of the road between Loanhead and Mains of Fedderate a large round yellow stone of circa 3cwts was found built into the dyke, and attested to be the Crawstane by a local man known to have seen the stone a number of years previously. It was removed to March Farm. The location of the stone shown on the 1st edition map was visited 22 October 2018 as part of Scotland's Rock Art Project, which confirmed no sign of a large stone at this location.
