Full Description

Site of pheasantry depicted on the 2nd edition OS map within the Haddo House designed landscape (NJ83SE0076). Rathmell Archaeology conducted an excavation at the site in August and September 2017, as part of a wider assessment of the historic environment within the Haddo House Deer Park (NJ83SE0152).The excavation recorded the remains of the foundations of the pheasantry walls. Two trenches were dug; the larger trench measured 14 m by 2.5 m and covered the southwestern length of the pheasantry, the smaller trench measured 1 m by 1 m and was located at the pheasantry’s northeastern corner. A course of stone wall base, assumed to be a floating foundation, measured 11 m by 0.4 m and ran parallel to the Deer Park wall. Abutting this were returns of red brick wall perpendicular to the Deer Park wall recorded at the northeastern and southwestern extents of the excavated area. In the upper layers, 19th-20th century finds of iron nails, metal wire, ceramic building material, glass, and pottery were recorded.
