Full Description

Site of a building depicted on the OS 2nd edition map, set against the corner boundary of the field. The 1st edition map shows what may be a smaller building set into this corner. The site lies within the Haddo House designed landscape (NJ83SE0076). Rathmell Archaeology conducted an excavation at the site in August and September 2017, as part of a wider assessment of the historic environment within the Haddo House Deer Park (NJ83SE0152). The excavation found what is likely to be a cobbled floor layer beneath the topsoil of a trench measuring 1.9 m by 2.9 m. The layer was characterised by sub-rounded and sub-angular stones ranging in size from 0.1 m to 0.35 m, with a discrete southeastern edge to the feature. Likely modern finds of nails and hinges were recorded throughout the topsoil and feature layers.
