Full Description

Site of chapel. A pre-Reformation chapel formerly stood at Chapelton. A font cut from a square granite block was found in the chapel ruins and is now in the manse at Methlick (NJ 8576 3707). Now no trace of chapel on the ground. In July 1999, an archaeological watching brief was undertaken. A short section of wall (circa 1.4 m) was uncovered. It ran north-south, and appeared to be of dry stone construction built using rubble granite stones of which only two courses could be seen in section. After recording, the trench was backfilled. It was not possible to ascertain the nature of wall, whether part of a now removed field dyke or part of the chapel enclosure - further excavation would be required to determine this.
