Full Description

Excavations were carried out in summer 2005 to the north of Oldmeldrum on features found during earlier trial trenching evaluation (see NJ82NW0113) and comprising the remains of at least three Bronze Age ring-ditch roundhouses and associated features, together apparently forming elements of an area of open settlement. The excavations were conducted in advance of the construction of a new bypass road around the north of Oldmeldrum, related to new housing development. The houses have been dated to the Late Bronze Age, and as such are very similar to structures discovered at Kintore. Numerous sherds of Prehistoric pottery, 98 lithic artefacts (predominantly flint and quartz) and a small assemblage of coarse stone artefacts were recovered from the site. Only a narrow linear area, the width of the road construction, was excavated and it seems that further remains are likely to present in the immediate vicinity of the site. Watching brief and excavations in August 2005 recorded another two ring ditch dwellings and two pits, dated to the late Bronze Age to Iron Age periods. Seven isolated pits were excavated, of which four yielded prehistoric pottery and lithics, including four hammer-stones, a quartz pebble gaming counter, a chipped slate disc and four pieces of burnt stone.
