Full Description
Two cut features recorded in trial trenching by Headland Archaeology in 2013 (see NJ81SE0641) ahead of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. An irregular cut in Trench NL0284 measured 1.92m by 1.82m and 0.6m deep. A flint chip of prehistoric date and abundant charcoal was recovered from an environmental sample. Radiocarbon dating of charcoal from the feature was radiocarbon dated to the Bronze Age (2202-2030 cal BC). The function of the feature is unclear and may have been a tree bole in which residual material accumulated, although it could have been actively used as a pit for burning activities. The cut in trench NL0282 was curvilinear, lined with angular stones. Modern pottery was retrieved from the base of the fill and the feature is thought to be the remains of a drystone enclosure, possible a sheep pen. Further excavation was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2014. A continuation of the stone filled curvilinear feature was recorded, interpreted as a possible post-medieval building foundation. Another section of a similar cut was found immediately north.
