Full Description
Middle Bronze Age roundhouse recorded by excavation ahead of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. A concentration of features was recorded in trial trenching by Headland Archaeology in 2013 (see NJ81SE0641) A curvilinear cut feature measuring 2.8m by 0.89m and 0.28m deep, interpreted as a ring ditch, produced flint chips, frequent charcoal and charred grain. Radiocarbon dating of the charcoal from the fill gave a Bronze Age date (1405-1208 BC). To the west was a cut feature, thought to be the terminus of the ring ditch. To the south a shallow pit contained burnt debris, including reddened small angular stones. Other features in proximity to the ring-ditch, are likely to represent contemporaneous activity and include post-holes, stake-holes and pits suggesting the presence of a roundhouse. Further excavation was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2014. A total of 56 cut features were recorded, and apart from three post-medieval furrows, these all related to the roundhouse structure. Narrow gullies northwest of the structure may have served to divert rainwater. Four postholes in the outer ring had been heavily truncated by large, ovoid pits measuring between 1.6m and 1.9m long, 1-1.5m wide and surviving up to 0.3m deep. Two saddle querns were recovered from one of the pits. Overlying the pits was a curvilinear ring ditch, the fill containing abundant charcoal (dated to 1410-1270 BC), and 42 sherds of prehistoric pottery. Another pit, to the south of the ovoid pit, was dated to the Middle Iron Age. A total of 48 lithics were recovered b the excavation (22 from the ring ditch), mainly chips and broken flakes.
