Full Description
Investigations were carried out over three weekends in May and June 2003, by a group of children and adults working with Aberdeen City Council Archaeological Unit on the well (NJ81SE0581) in the south-west corner of the churchyard at the Chapel of Stoneywood, also known as St Mary's Chapel (NJ81SE0555). Further excavation in 2004 revealed the well upper stones of the well which is sub-oval in shape subsequently carried out. The northern part of the well, comprising a C-plan section of drystone walling, appears to have been constructed first (although no evidence to date this was found). At a later date a further C-shaped section of walling was added, possibly in the 19th century. A small number of 19th-century pottery and roof tile fragments were recovered during the excavation.
