Full Description
Pits recorded during trial trenching by Headland Archaeology in 2013 ahead of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (NJ81SE0076). Five pits were recorded in Trench NL0522: one contained traces of hammerscale suggesting localised smithing activity, another containing traces of nutshell. No dating material was recovered from any of the pits and they are all of unknown function. Three small pit features were recorded in Trench NL0528. Hammerscale was recovered from the fills of one but the other produced only a small piece of modern glass. A single pit like feature in Trench NL0537 also contained traces of hammerscale. Further excavation was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2014 but no further archaeological features were recorded.
