Full Description

Pits recorded during evaluation and excavation by Headland Archaeology ahead of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (see NJ81SE0076). A single pit was recorded during trial trenching in 2013. It measured 0.28m by 0.28m by 0.08m, with rare amounts of charcoal but no evidence to indicate date or function. Further excavation was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2014. Features recorded included a truncated ring gully in the northern part of the site dated to the early medieval period (radiocarbon dated to 640-770 AD), three undated possible pits, a system of medieval or post-medieval rig and furrow, and 20th century drainage. The basal fill of the gully may represent in situ burning of longitudinal timbers, perhaps of structural origin. It also contained oat and barley grains, weed seeds and nutshells. Monitored topsoil stripping was carried out by Headland Archaeology in November 2015 but no archaeological features or artefacts were recorded.
